the postive of bmya is that we talk about all the problems that young black males have in many different communities.one negative that the class have is we are not on the same subject that the other advisory s classes.an all male black male class it can help black youth connect to each other and it can also keep up grades

I don't see value in having a class like this. Sometimes we talk about interesting things. I don't pay attention a lot because I don't get a grade.

Student need to come to class on time. We get to come together and talk about things that affect us like gangs being poor and how cops treat us. we cant talk about these things in regular classes because the focus of the class is on something else.

A positive aspect of having a course such as BMYA is the ability of us as young black youth to learn about things that are relevant to us. We need to have this class so that we can learn about the hegemonic forces against us. A negative aspect will be that some people that are put in the class holds us back as whole due to the lack of wanting to be there. There should be a beginning of the year meeting that the student and parent should attend. A more open area will help kids want to be here such as a comfortable room where we can play our music, set our own rules and regulations so that everyone knows what they are getting into

BMYA affects students at Locke High School in a positive way.It provides us educational oppurtunities to learn more about our culture and to relate to one another. In other words classes such as BMYA provides relatively information most of us didn't know. I would love to see more classes like BMYA across many campuses due to the lack of unity amongst African American Male students. BMYA has created unity between one another and gave everyone the sense and ideas that we are all brothers and we do everything together, it also models the idea of getting more African American Males into the next step out of high school which is college, However i believe the Class can improve if more activities was included so that everyone can work together, and also if we are provided food so that we can perform in class studies and break bread together with that being one less problem students like myself are worried about.

A positive about a course such as BMYA, is the simple fact its the only space or environment where i can actually be myself and feel comfortable in a learning space. It gives me a chance out the the day to really sit, think, and discuss the issues we as young black male are facing in our everyday life. A negative is the negative people in the positive environment. If we not only as African Americans, but students period in general, had a chance to choose our classes based off our aspirations, skills, and interest, or even maybe on things that would help set us in the right path to success for ourselves, and i believe thats a huge step toward the improvement not only with black males in the campus, but Locke as a whole.

There are multiple benefits to a course like the BMYA especially at Locke:
Given the absences of African heritage based education for students in traditional curriculum the subject matter students are exposed to provides opportunity for these young black male to develop critical literacy skills through relevant texts.
Another benefit is the emotional social support students receive in the class where they are able to develop relationships with other students as well as develop trust with the teacher in the space and other in class support staff.

I think one way an all black male class at Locke can improve is by elevating the profile and identity of the students in the class as Urban Scholars and as a group of student representatives. Often times sports teams on campuses are seen as the representatives of the school. Privileging the voice of the students on campus is paramount for their self esteem, sense of belonging and pride in their school.

I would also add, that providing other positive male figures in the class to support the teacher and students is valuable.
