In my experience police brutality is a problem b/c i grew up were the police will stop you for nothing & just b/c Iam black. One time i witnessed the police chased my friend & beat him. They said they beat him b/c he was resisting arrest. I feel like the police thinks it cool to kill innocent African American b/c there were several black guys killed by the law enforcement this year. The (officers) that killed these innocent black males was not indict. That has caused riots & etc in many cities & Country. Thats why i say the police do not care about us AFRICAN AMERICAN PEOPLE.

Derrick Rose & other NBA stars are wearing these "I cant breathe" shirts for the movement of Eric Garner family. Jcole made a song about the Michael Brown movement "Hands up dont shoot". All these deaths thats been going on is going to make people mad & thats when riots & looting starts.

Police brutality is a problem because it is dehumanizing and often goes unchecked. Unfortunately, I have witnessed and experienced too many incidences of police violence in my life on this earth as black male.

The death of Eric Garner is exemplary of the tension that exists in this country between SOME black men and SOME police officers. I say some because I know that police are humans and I say some because I know that not every black man or person has had these types of interactions with police.

I have seen countless videos in the past few months of horrendous actions taken by police. It seems like a never ending cycle. One woman was beat up by a California Highway Patrol Officer like it was a UFC cage match. SMACK!!! BANG!!! BANG BANG It was like a flurry of punches as the officer was on top of the woman goin' H.A.M. I wasn't surprised later to find out that the woman received serious injuries to and was in critical condition. The woman in the video did not swing at the officer I didn't really even see her effectively defend herself. Just SMACK BAM BANG BANG BANG his black leather gloved fists rapid fire into her face. You would have thought the officer was in a war and the woman was her enemy...

Though I didn't witness this first-hand and I don't know fully what transpired before the video was shot. I can't find any logical reason that a grown man would beat up a woman like that. Again, though I didn't witness this personally I have experienced first hand other times when police have sprayed mace into a crowd of peaceful people, or bang children to the ground or on the top of a patrol car.

The Los Angeles County Sherriffs have I treated me the worst out of the law enforcement agencies that I've come in contact with. I plan to become a lawyer and I aim to impact they way Sherriffs are trained and employed. There are other groups who are also currently working on reform. President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder have purposed to require to all law enforcement wear cameras on their body. I know this has been used in the past but I'm still not sure this is the answer to the problem. The problem is deeper. Eric Garner's death was caught on camera. The footage neither kept him alive nor aided in the prosecution (or even indictment of his killers).

I have witnessed students in Mr. Lawson's class educate themselves about history and current events. I have seen them take efforts to increase their ability to communicate with people who are in positions of authority. It's almost like they have to become Jedi's to defeat the sith. I don't mean to make this an Us vs. Them issue but I believe that being able to calm on officer down with your words and articulate your own intentions is counter - hegemonic. Arming your mind with words and ways of speaking is counter hegemonic because the status quo, the norm, and what's often expected of these young man is that they don't know how to act. Many in the world have bought into the idea that black folks are helpless. That is lie. The Urban Scholars at Locke and at other schools who take advantage of every opportunity to learn in grow inside and outside of the classroom are challenging the system. Police violence is not only physical, it can be emotional, verbal, spiritual, and systemic. Their path to college and financial success stands opposite of the hegemonic narrative of the self destructive black male.
